Up at 4.30am, the boys at Green Lake must each dig such a hole, out in the heat of the desert, before he can return to camp and rest. Digging holes that are precisely five feet wide, five feet long and five feet deep isn't fun either. Victim of a miscarriage of justice, Stanley has been sent to Camp Green Lake. The palindromic Stanley Yelnats, in any case, is not a bad boy. Summary: Holes is a quirky, individual little book that can be read by children and adults alike. Kaye attempts to control her newfound abilities by enlisting the help of a Kelpie to teach her how to use magic. Since Kaye is not mortal, the ritual will be forfeit, and the fairies whom the Unseelie Court wants to be bound to them will go free. Later on, her same "imaginary" friends inform her that she is actually a changeling and that she should keep her human appearance because the Unseelie Court wishes to use her as a tithe to hell. In revenge, Kaye tricks Roiben into telling her his full name (she later learns that by knowing the true name of a faerie, fairies are forced to obey whatever they are told to do). Soon after this, her old "imaginary" friends contact her and warn her that Roiben is a murderer and he’s killed Gristle. In return, he grants her three truthfully answered questions about anything, which she does not immediately use. Her suspicions dissolve when she finds and saves the life of Roiben, a faerie knight, by pulling a magicked arrow out of his chest. However, she can't find them and begins to suspect that they were simply figments of her imagination. Once at her grandmother's house, Kaye begins to look for her old "imaginary" friends who were faeries named Lutie-Loo, Spike, and Gristle. After her mother's boyfriend, Lloyd, attempts to stab her mother unexpectedly, her mother takes her back to Kaye's grandmother's house to stay. The book begins in Philadelphia at one of Kaye's mother's concerts. This is also innovative with the realistic fantasy of Danny getting two chances on each day the reason given is that he was born on February 2 at 2:22. Video games take up a lot of mental real estate for many of my students, are there aren’t many books that include them in the plot unless they are fantasy books where children get sucked into the games. “This was sort of like a football book, but with video game on-field action. Here is one more book that I just discovered: The Double Life of Danny Day by Mike Thayer Please welcome my guest post author today, Liam O’Donnell! Now, he has a new series that is honestly sheer genius! A chapter book series based on MINECRAFT! My son is a serious gamer - he actually went to Minecraft camp not once but twice! - and my husband and I work hard but futilely to keep his screen time down to two hours a day. But, Liam’s books worked beautifully to keep my son reading and wanting more. These short mysteries were HARD to figure out sometimes the two of us would be right, sometimes we missed the mark entirely. My son and I LOVED the Max Finder by Liam O’Donnell graphic novel mystery series when he was in first and second grade. This novel was nothing like the Wilder I know from having seen and read Our Town. There is a land of the living and a land of the dead and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning.” But the love will have been enough all those impulses of love return to the love that made them. “oon we shall die and all memory of those five will have left the earth, and we ourselves shall be loved for a while and forgotten. He should have left faith out of the equation completely: as the old Abbess of the orphanage/hospital understands, the love between humans is the only connection that matters: For his efforts to see a link between the character of a person and the sudden, premature death brought on by calamity, he is burned at the stake for heresy. In The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder, a priest tries to find the connection between the five people killed by the unexpected collapse of the Bridge of San Luis Rey and his faith in God. The Bridge of San Luis Rey: Collapse and ConnectionĮvery great book has as a theme the need for connection: the human desire to connect with another living being. While the ultimate goals of superintelligences can vary greatly, a functional superintelligence will spontaneously generate, as natural subgoals, " instrumental goals" such as self-preservation and goal-content integrity, cognitive enhancement, and resource acquisition. Such a superintelligence would be very difficult to control or restrain. Regardless of the initial timescale, once human-level machine intelligence is developed, a "superintelligent" system that "greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest" would, most likely, follow surprisingly quickly. It is unknown whether human-level artificial intelligence will arrive in a matter of years, later this century, or not until future centuries. Sufficiently intelligent machines could improve their own capabilities faster than human computer scientists, and the outcome could be an existential catastrophe for humans. It argues that if machine brains surpass human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could replace humans as the dominant lifeform on Earth. Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies is a 2014 book by the Swedish philosopher Nick Bostrom from the University of Oxford. Philosophy is often dismissed as a purely academic discipline with no relation to the "real" world non-philosophers are compelled to inhabit. Because the text approaches these issues from the gound up, the untrained reader will emerge from its pages able to explore other philosophies with greater pleasure and understanding and be able to think-philosophically-for him or herself. Each chapter explains a major issue, and gives the reader a self-contained guide through the problems that the philosophers have studied. In a lively and accessible style, Blackburn approaches the nature of human reflection and how we think, or can think, about knowledge, fate, ethics, identity, God, reason, and truth. Simon Blackburn, author of the best-selling Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy, begins by making a convincing case for the relevance of philosophy and goes on to give the reader a sense of how the great historical figures such as Plato, Hume, Kant, Descartes, and others have approached its central themes. Written expressly for "anyone who believes there are big questions out there, but does not know how to approach them," Think provides a sound framework for exploring the most basic themes of philosophy, and for understanding how major philosophers have tackled the questions that have pressed themselves most forcefully on human consciousness. Here at last is a coherent, unintimidating introduction to the challenging and fascinating landscape of Western philosophy.
